At 17:00 on October 9, Beijing time, the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry was announced.
Three scientists, Professor John B. goodenough, University of Texas Austin,
Professor M. Stanley whittlingham, State University of New York, and Professor Akira Yoshino,
a Japanese chemist, won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their outstanding contributions
in the field of lithium-ion batteries.
It is worth mentioning that Professor John B. goodenough,
who is known as the father of lithium battery among the three scientists,
is 97 years old and has set a new age record for winning the Nobel Prize.
Lithium ion battery can be expected in the future
The three scientists who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry have carried out different researches
on lithium-ion batteries. They have realized the transformation of battery materials from
lithium metal to lithium ion, the leap from disposable battery to rechargeable battery
and the establishment of lithium-ion battery model.
It is based on their research that lithium-ion batteries can be commercialized.
From smart phones, computers to electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries go
deep into every aspect of our daily life.
In fact, compared with lead battery and nickel chromium battery,
lithium battery has the advantages of high safety, small size and high energy density.
The life span of lithium battery on the market is generally about 5-6 years, while that of
lead-acid battery is less than 5 years. At present, the energy density of lithium battery
is about 200 ~ 260wh / g,and that of lead-acid battery is about 50 ~ 70wh / g.
This means that with the same capacity, the weight of lead-acid battery will be 3-5 times
that of lithium battery. At the same time, the weight of lithium battery
can also improve the endurance of electric vehicles.
From this point of view, lithium-ion battery as a mainstream technology has great potential. "
Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said publicly.
This means that the future power battery will be an important engine
for the growth of lithium-ion battery field.
